Weißt du, was mich an Sonntagnachmittagen immer stört?
You know what always bothers me about Sunday afternoons? Not the emptiness — the time that becomes visible here. During the week it hides behind appointments, and then you sit here and it runs over your feet like water you can't stop.
- Iris
That really is the oldest image in the world — time as water. The Greeks had two gods for it so one could at least let them argue: Chronos, who measures the water, and Kairos, who says when to jump. You're complaining to Chronos because you missed Kairos.
- Thomas
I knew you'd say that — you say it in every conversation where the word time comes up. And every time it annoys me, and every time you're right, and this pattern is itself a Sunday-afternoon phenomenon: the repetition you see coming and still don't dodge.
- Iris
Which brings me to the actually interesting question we've so far skillfully avoided: does the present exist at all? It is, if you will, only the border between two nothings — the past, which no longer is, and the future, which is not yet.
- Thomas
An argument Augustine must already have made with the same thermos — I ask for a more modern version. As soon as you say «present», it's past, true, but it doesn't follow that it wasn't there. The knife you can't hold still cuts all the same.
- Iris
The knife cuts — good, that's the pragmatic answer, and it's irrefutable because it doesn't argue but works. I believe that's why the philosophy of time keeps failing against the natural sciences: the present isn't an assertion but an activity. You are present; you don't have it.
- Thomas
«You are present; you don't have it» — if you keep this up I'll have to record you on our next walk. You see, this is the moment when the conversation itself becomes the present we're looking for: we only notice it was there once it's over, and precisely for that reason we keep talking.
- Iris
And with that we'd have arrived at the actually uncomfortable truth I've spared you so far: the Sunday afternoon isn't empty, it's full — just not with you. It's full with exactly what you miss while you think about it.
- Thomas
That was a bit too good for a Sunday. Shouldn't we simply admit that we're trying to save the afternoon by talking it to pieces? Pour me another — I'm close to agreeing with you on everything, and I'd like to postpone that a little.
- Iris
Postpone — very nice, then at least we're agreed that deferring the present is the only reliable way to lengthen it. To pouring another — and tomorrow, promised, we'll talk about something easier. About Monday, for instance.
