Guten Appetit.
Distinguished guests — I'll keep the table speech short, I promise, and you may hold me to my word, as is proper: cooperation between our countries has been strained in recent months — I say this without reproach, the way one names weather one has lived through together. Enjoy your meal.
- Delegationsleiter
Naming weather without reproach — that's a style I know how to appreciate and gladly return. If I may name the weather: it has hailed, and on both sides we've had umbrellas we didn't open. I consider that the real message of this year.

The umbrella metaphor is pretty, but allow a more serious note: the customs questions left open in autumn are, for our companies, no metaphor but bookkeeping. I'd like to understand what sequence your side envisions before we talk about levels.
- Delegationsleiter
Bookkeeping deserves bookkeeping; I respect that. And yet, you understand: at a dinner table no sequence is proclaimed that could stand in the official gazette the next day. What I can say is a direction — and it reads: parallel rather than sequential. Everything else belongs at another table, and I suggest we keep both tables open.
- Botschafterin
Both tables open — that's more than was in the invitation, and I'll be so polite as not to pin it down. But I may remind of a house rule: at the second course we don't talk about customs but about music. My wife plays the piano, and I have the suspicion that the head of delegation is a Beethoven man.
- Delegationsleiter
A suspicion I share — Beethoven, late sonatas, and I confess: whoever hears the fugue can no longer negotiate properly, because he hears the order in which arguments want to be led. If your wife plays the Hammerklavier sonata, I'll accept any sequence you've withheld from me today.
- Wirtschaftsberaterin
I venture a quiet objection in favor of bookkeeping: the fugue may hear the order of the arguments — the companies will hear the numbers on Monday. I beg the table's forgiveness for reminding of the follow-up dates at dessert, but remembrance is my profession.
- Botschafterin
And a good profession, as one can see. So let's record what this dinner is capable of recording — at the metaphorical level we've just allowed ourselves: the tables stay open, the sequence will be ordered at one of these tables, and we keep the numbers in memory until they have a form in which they can be carried.
- Delegationsleiter
Agreed, and allow a personal closing remark: I've learned in thirty years that negotiations begun with music and good food are rarely the hard ones. The hard ones begin with negotiation protocols — and today we needed none.
- Botschafterin
None needed, and yet one written — the round table will remember, and the house has a good memory. To the open tables, ladies and gentlemen — and to the music that comes while the conversation hasn't yet been negotiated.
