  1. Galeristin

Mr. Kessler, how lovely that you made it. Have you already done a tour — and may I introduce you to the artist before she gets surrounded by the collectors?

  2. Besucher

Gladly, but first I must pay you a compliment: the hanging is excellent. The large formats in the main room get exactly the distance they need — at far too many openings that is unfortunately sacrificed to the lighting.

  3. Galeristin

You've hit a nerve — the room planning took two months; we actually had to pare back the lighting. Come, Ms. Marek is standing by the diptych; it works best in conversation anyway.

Ah, you're the gentleman who looked at the drawings so long. Feel free to ask — the better conversations arise away from the catalog text.

  5. Besucher

I was taken with the series of pencil works, especially the sections you left out. What I can't quite follow are the red-pencil interventions in the otherwise so quiet sheets — they strike me like a loudspeaker in a library.

An objection I take seriously, and you're not the only one. The red is a refusal of the silence; that's intentional — for me the sheets are death masks of a landscape that once existed, and grief that stays entirely quiet goes unheard.

  7. Besucher

That reading actually changes the works. I had read the red strokes as erosion, not as a scream — perhaps as an old land surveyor I project too much precision into them.

That projection is not a mistake but half the work. If you read the strokes as erosion, you're at my second series hanging in the side room — the ground photographs nobody talks about because they're uncommented.

  9. Galeristin

And with that we'd be at the conversation I wanted to enable for you. I'll leave you two alone — the champagne reception is waiting, and I still have to talk with the daily paper's critic before he writes instead of asks.

  10. Besucher

One more question before the crowd arrives: do you work on the ground photographs with a specimen, or do you alter the photographs themselves? This boundary interests me — out of professional habit, I admit.

The photographs remain untouched — what you see is a selection from four hundred, all taken on the same day. The gap between two images is the actual intervention, if you will: I censor the time in between.

  12. Besucher

«I censor the time in between» — that's the loveliest sentence I've heard at an opening night. May I borrow the sentence for the side-catalog? Good saying, bad business: I'll sell it to you in exchange for a drawing.

Handshake — and I assume you mean it seriously, since you were the first to ask about the uncommented. Artists reward that with originals.
