This book split us like none before it, so let's start with the simplest question there isn't: does this novel tell the truth about its characters — or does it only tell what the narrator believes?

The narrator is unreliable; that's settled for me. But the real thing is: the novel makes us accomplices. From page a hundred we know the memory is fragmentary, and we still read on as if it weren't.

Though I would contradict the reading that treats the unreliability as a trick. In my opinion it's not a feat of virtuosity but a condition: memory is the only thing the character possesses, and the gap in it is her identity.

That's beautifully said, but does it excuse the form? In places the novel degenerates into a sequence of carefully placed gap asymmetries — you can see the technique, and as soon as I see technique, a narrative loses its aura for me.

I'd be careful with the aura concept — it presumes there's such a thing as innocent narration. Every narrative sets gaps; the question is whether it hides or exhibits them. Our author exhibits them, which is perhaps a question of taste, not of quality.

A distinction I'd like to accept, though it doesn't quite convince me. Take the ending: the character consciously chooses the lie — that's not unreliable memory but resistant memory. In my view that makes the novel more political than it looks.

  7. Teilnehmer

Politisch?

Political? I'd rather say: affirmative. The novel delivers the resistance prepackaged, with an Adorno quotation thrown in as a voucher. That's resistance as a consumer product.

That's now the third level of our discussion: first the characters, then the form, now the reception. I suggest we record what we share: that the novel takes fragmentary memory seriously and lets the reader work with the gap. Objections?

  9. Teilnehmer

No objections to the summary — only to the novel. But a book that we can argue about like this for two hours has somehow prevailed.

I'll sign that. And for next time I suggest something shorter — my copy has marginal notes that would fill a master's thesis of their own.

Voted and carried. I'll send you the titles for selection tomorrow — and Mr. Objection's reading notes here as a special print.
