  1. Gastgeber

I hope the dessert has civilized everyone — then I dare raise the topic that led to a fight at every one of my dinners before: should the cities keep their theaters with tax money when the halls are half empty?

  2. Gast 1

You invoke the half-empty argument as if emptiness were a moral failing. A theater is not a cinema whose value is exhausted in seats sold. The question, asked more honestly in reverse: what does a city lose when it loses its theaters — not in euros but in self-understanding?

  3. Gast 2

Beautiful rhetoric, which I share as long as it isn't issued as an invoice. The fact remains: in the twenty years of my patronage, per-capita theater funding rose by sixty percent, attendance by four. At some point the gap is no longer self-understanding but subsidy logic.

  4. Gastgeber

Though the sixty percent are calculated somewhat disingenuously if you leave out inflation and renovation obligations. I recall the wording of your own committee report — it sounded considerably more cautious than you're being today.

  5. Gast 2

Classic, when a historian uses the wording against the speaker. I reply with the source you cite without naming: the same report also states that attendance per performance has been stable since the nineties — culture isn't flattening, it's just redistributing. I carried that along too, by the way.

  6. Gast 1

Redistributing — to where? Into the private houses, the festivals, the digital space. And there, wherever it redistributes, it works without the safety nets the municipal theater offers: no ensemble, no protection for provocation, no continuity. With your subsidy logic you're financing not the theater but its having-no-alternative.

  7. Gast 3

If I may speak as the only one here without an agenda: you're both right, and that's not a diplomatic phrase. The numbers from you, the values from you — and the real question is a different one: how does one measure cultural impact so the dispute isn't fought again for the next twenty years with the same arguments?

  8. Gastgeber

That puts you at the point where the discussion usually falls apart, because impact measurement seems a bit absurd to everyone involved in it.

  9. Gast 2

Absurd or not — without measurement it remains assertion against assertion. I modestly propose: a five-part model of reach, continuity, influence, educational impact, and price. And I'll tell you beforehand what happens: both sides will accept the model and then fight about the weights. But a fight about weights is at least a fight about numbers.

  10. Gast 1

I'll sign on to the model — on condition that «influence» doesn't become a container where each side stows its unmeasurables. And in case we do reach agreement: should we forward the minutes of this dinner to the cultural committee, or keep them as a family secret?

  11. Gastgeber

Forward it — but only after the second dessert. No cultural committee has ever passed a good resolution while too sober.

  12. Gast 3

And so the dinner ends like all the ones before: not with unanimity, but with a compromise everyone takes home. To «influence» — however it gets weighted.
