Good evening — is this also your first time at this fair? I'm desperately looking for someone to explain to me where the reception actually is.

Guten Abend!
Good evening! Yes, my first time too. The reception is one floor up — you have to go past the booths, then left. I'm Miriam Stein, by the way; I work at a logistics startup.

Ah, der Hinweis rettet meinen Abend, danke! Ich bin David Mwangi, ich berate Mittelständler bei Digitalisierungsprojekten. Was macht Ihr Startup genau?
Ah, that tip saves my evening, thanks! I'm David Mwangi; I advise mid-sized companies on digitization projects. What exactly does your startup do?

We build software for last-mile deliveries, that is, distribution from the depot onward. At the moment we're struggling with larger customers dismissing us as too small.

I know that from clients myself. The trick is usually to present references from a related industry — size suddenly counts for less.

A related industry for us would be beverage wholesale. Do you have contacts there? That would be a door-opener.

Two, actually. I suggest I send you an email tomorrow with a brief introduction, so you can invoke my name.

That would be wonderful. And if I can return the favor: I can introduce you to the head of the booth next door; he's currently looking for consultants for a process project.

Perfekt — so funktioniert Networking.
Perfect — that's how networking works. Shall we head over right away while the reception is still open? First conversations run more loosely in front of the buffet, in my experience.

Gute Idee. Kein Drama.
Good idea. Let's go — and if the conversation at the booth goes nowhere, we'll simply say goodbye kindly. No drama.

Exactly the right attitude. I hate it when people artificially drag conversations out even though both parties long since want to move on.

In that case let's agree on the graceful-exit signal: if one of us raises the glass and says «much success», the other may end the conversation.

Agreed — that's almost professional efficiency. To a successful evening — and to two new contacts.
- Teilnehmerin
To the two contacts. And tomorrow morning you'll have my email in your inbox.
