  1. Reisende

Guten Tag. Ich möchte eine Fahrkarte nach Hamburg, bitte.

Good day. I'd like a ticket to Hamburg, please.

  2. Beamter

Guten Tag. Einfach oder hin und zurück?

Good day. One way or round trip?

  3. Reisende

Round trip, please. I'm traveling tomorrow morning and coming back on Sunday.

  4. Beamter

Möchten Sie mit dem ICE fahren? Der ist schneller, aber teurer.

Would you like to travel on the ICE? It's faster, but more expensive.

  5. Reisende

Wie groß ist der Unterschied? Ich habe nicht so viel Geld eingeplant.

How big is the difference? I didn't plan to spend that much.

  6. Beamter

Mit dem ICE: achtundsechzig Euro. Mit dem Regionalexpress: zweiundvierzig Euro. Der braucht nur eine Stunde länger.

With the ICE: sixty-eight euros. With the regional express: forty-two euros. It only takes an hour longer.

  7. Reisende

Then I'll take the regional express, because it's cheaper. When does it depart?

  8. Beamter

Tomorrow at a quarter past eight from platform seven. You arrive in Hamburg at a quarter to one.

  9. Reisende

    Muss ich umsteigen?

Do I have to change trains?

  10. Beamter

Ja, einmal in Hannover. Sie haben dort zwanzig Minuten Zeit. Das reicht locker.

Yes, once in Hanover. You have twenty minutes there. That's easily enough.

  11. Reisende

Gut.

Good. Is the ticket also valid on the buses in Hamburg?

  12. Beamter

Unfortunately not. The ticket is only valid for the train. For the bus you need a separate ticket.

Note the correction of the false assumption: «gilt nur für …» — you'll hear this pattern whenever terms are restricted.

  13. Reisende

Alles klar.

All right. Can you also tell me where my train will be today evening? I'd like to prepare.

  14. Beamter

Just look at the display board in the waiting room. All the platforms are listed there. And if the train is delayed, that's shown there too.

  15. Reisende

Vielen Dank für Ihre Hilfe! Das war sehr nützlich.

Thank you very much for your help! That was very useful.

  16. Beamter

Gern. Hier ist Ihre Fahrkarte und die Reservierung. Gute Reise!

You're welcome. Here's your ticket and the reservation. Have a good trip!
